What is Uncle Ron's Academy?

Uncle Ron’s Academy is a happy dynamically fluid crew who gather in various sized groups, committees, gatherings, celebrations enjoying visits with or just hanging around Uncle Ron.

Who is Uncle Ron? Uncle Ron is a "spirit". However, the Academy should say that it was a "aha" sort or moment when we realized that the "Ron" in Ron Carioca or Ron Zacapa Centenario was not a primero nombre but Rum! So when we gather it’s more of a family adventure valuing all those great things like life, love, learning. It is more than a night out on the town... So, we are Uncle Ron’s Academy....

This blog spot will feature all sorts of things like rum, music, feasts, literature, dancing, links to other rum sites, events, adventurers and one of the great causes we support: Los Primos Project

Uncle Ron's Rum Pot

2013-2014
The first offering to the 2014 Rumpot was discovered at  Les Dignes  in Grand Digue, New Brunswick.

It's a great place for fresh baking, fresh happy in season veggies and lot's of local products....

Below you can see Moosehead fan and faculty member Don Ron Brian ensuring the strawberries' quality, that production standards are met and tha the last drop is not wasted.

2012-2013

After the Strawberries were added in went the raspberries .... above is Augusto and Yamile's daughter ( Alison) with Kay who is a member of Uncle Ron's Academy and NS Cuba.

To connect this year's rum pot with last year's rum pot Cuban vocalist Sheila Cabriales and Belkys de la Paz Portal ( Director at Escuela Nacional de Música) added nectar from last year's rum pot.....

There were many fruits added this year.. many from last year. A new source was from NS Cuba members, Los Primos supporters and Uncle Ron's Academy ( URA) faculty members Anna and Theo. GRAPES from their backyard in Halifax (below) are topping off the rum pot by URA members Justin and Patricia:

We'll see how it tastes in May.................

2011-2012
More of Nova Scotia's Harvest.
On Friday Sept. 2nd Academy members motored to Noggins Corner Farm Market and picked up some Red Pears, Early Plums, Blackberries and Peaches... to add to the other fruit that is being transformed by Cruzan's 151 proof... Also added are dried Nova Scotia Cherries and Cranberries from Terra Beata Cranberry Farm. sorry for the fuzzy pic but it is a grey  Sunday morning in Dartmouth Cove

End of July June Plums and Red Currants
The Academy picked some Indian Plums (some call them June Plums) in Wallace . Also picked up in Wallace were some Red Currants that were purchased at the United Church's Chowder Lunch and Flea Market( they were from Wallace Station).
RUM POT 2012's Beginnings.....
This Summer Uncle Ron was pretty excited to be invited to Nova Scotia Cuba Association’s gathering at Don Ron Theo and Dona Rona Anna’s Casa where Maria de la Luz B’Hamel the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba was the special guest.  The Academy invited Maria to start the Rum Pot for 2012…. Here she is adding CRUZAN Aged Rum 151 Proof to Strawberries from Millen Farms Ltd. U-Pick – strawberries 80 Little Dyke Road, Glenholme, NS…   For more mighty fine products from Nova Scotia for your rumpot check out TASTE of Nova Scotia and Select Nova Scotia.

The 2010 2011 Rum pot is doing it's thing on two coasts... here are two pics.. one of Uncle Ron's Dartmouth Campus and one of Tsawwassen Campus's first rum pot.

Don Ron's Dave, Jeff and Sean adding the first rum to 2010-2011 Rum Pot in Dartmouth.... The rum is Pott Real Übersee Rum . Lambs 150 was added.

Don Ron Art visited Don Ron Graham in September and helped get the Tsawwassen Campus' Rum pot started.
Well put more pics on Flickr.

The Rum pot ( here is a Nova Scotia recipe)or Rumtopf is a glorious thing. It was first discovered by the majority of the Academy through the Malagash Academy members. We’ve had a lot of fun with it, and as we type, this year’s is sitting in the fridge brimming full of wonderful elixir and joyous comestibles.

We serve both the fruit and nectar with ice cream or the Academy just nibble and sip at it. A week or two later we use the left over fruit to make a most amazing venison curry...( I think this year we’ll make the curry the day before and serve it up at Uncle Ron’s Night!)

We usually use Lamb’s 151 (review) as the rum and the fruit comes from far and wide..... One thing we do change from the traditional recipes is we cut back on the sugar and add dried fruit instead.

This years rum pot features:

Strawberries from Webster’s; Raspberries from Holly ( Dartmouth Cove); June Plumbs from the Point (Wallace Bay), Rhubarb from Holly; Sour Cherries from Ira and Nancy’s in Wallace; Plumbs from the Alderney Framer’s Market brought in by a Preston vendor; High Bush blueberries from Nova Agri’s Between the Bushes, Low bush blueberries from Cumberland County, dried cranberries from Terra Beata Farms; Arctic Kiwis from Lunenburg Country Winery; pears from Noggins Corner Farm Market; and a couple of russets from Stirling Fruit Farm. The imported ingredients (dried papaya, mangos, ginger) are sourced from Sobey’s)

It’s gonna be a good one......
